“The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit…gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.” Galatians 5:17 (NLT)
If you take a look at your current situation and realize that you’re overweight and out of shape, you may recognize you’ve been living to satisfy your flesh or sinful nature. The flesh doesn’t stop at full or make good nutritional choices. The flesh doesn’t exercise.
If you are a child of God this causes you regret and dismay over your actions and you realize you are not honoring God with your health, nor are you happy with your overweight, out of condition body.
You were born with a sinful nature that wants it’s own way, but the scripture above warns you that following the Spirit is the opposite of following after your flesh. You are now convinced that change is necessary, you’ve been following the wrong master.
When you live to please the Spirit you submit to him instead of your fleshly desires and you are blessed with amazing Godly results. Focus that is centered on following the Spirit in battle leads you to a healthy body and God centered mind.
With your new focus on pleasing the Spirit your decisions are then filtered through your desire to obey God. The obstacle you will need to overcome is your lack of training in this area. You are simply used to feeding your flesh without giving much thought to what the Spirit would have you to do in the area of your food and daily exercise.
Therefore the quickest way to success is to start taking direction from God. Ask for guidance, and then as difficult as this struggle will be you’ve got to live to please the Spirit instead of your flesh. Stop eating the second the Spirit prompts you to stop.
You may have 1 bite left on your plate or 20, but you’ve got to be obedient to the Holy Spirit. He is a gentleman, so he won’t make you stop, he’ll give you a full or satisfied feeling. Then it’s up to you to obey.
This change will effect what you eat, how much you eat, and what you do on a daily basis for exercise. You’ll want to solidify the positive changes in every aspect of your life. Obeying the Spirit pleases God, and he will bless you as you make every effort to live for him.
